When packaging is termed 'biodegradable' this claim means nothing as there are no certifications to support it. Why no certifications? Because technically, everything is biodegradable, even plastic will break down in nature over time ... it becomes brittle and fragments which means that it meets the definition of biodegradable. There is a general assumption that if a material is biodegradable, that it is safe, but that's not necessarily true. Compostability in the other hand can be determined by rigorous testing and certifications.

Absolutely. Our mailers pass rigorous global and local home compostable testing to ensure they will biodegrade under home composting conditions. Please note, this does not mean they will break down if just left in nature, they do need the heat and moisture associated with a compost to kickstart the process. They are also tested to be worm safe so no issues there either!

Compostable packaging is far from perfect. While it is partly made from plants, it is also made from a petroluem-based compound called PBAT. Petroleum is a non-renewable resource. They also need composting conditions to biodegrade and will not break down unless they have the heat and moisture from a compost. If someone doesn't have a compost and they are sent to landfill, they may produce methane there, depending on the type of landfill it is.

Compostable Packaging is certified to biodegrade safely with a specified timeframe when exposed to the heat and moisture generated by a compost.
